Before you start

Confirm that you have downloaded the APK from the developer’s official section or an authorised mirror. If you have not yet compared the signature, do that first; see the signature verification guide.

Step 1: Open Settings

Open the system Settings app and tap Apps. On Android 14, the label is Apps with a sub-menu of Special access. On Android 7 and 8, the label is Apps & notifications.

Step 2: Special access → Install unknown apps

From the Apps screen, choose Special access and then Install unknown apps. You will see a list of apps that are allowed to install other apps.

Step 3: Pick the source app

Pick the file manager or browser you used to fetch the APK. Toggle Allow from this source on. Grant the permission narrowly: to the file manager, not to your browser.

Step 4: Open the APK

Open the file manager, navigate to the APK and tap it. Android will show the package name and requested permissions. Compare the package name to the developer entry before continuing.

Step 5: Install

Tap Install. When the install completes, tap Open only if you intend to use the app immediately; otherwise tap Done.

Step 6: Revoke the permission

Return to Settings → Apps → Special access → Install unknown apps and toggle the source app back off. This is the single most useful safety habit when sideloading.

If you see an error

The troubleshooting guide maps each common error code to a next step.

Why the install path changes between Android versions

Google has moved the Install unknown apps permission three times since Android 7. The first move took the setting out of Security and put it under each app that requested it. The second move put it inside Special access. The third move renamed Special access to a different submenu. The Yono Rummy library install guide follows the real menu path on every version it covers.

Before you start

After the install completes

Open the app once, confirm the version field matches the value on the app section, then return to Settings and revoke the Install unknown apps permission for the file manager. The download-safety section covers the full checklist for ongoing use.
