Step 1: Confirm the package name

Open Settings → Apps and find the installed entry. Note the package name exactly. The new APK must have the same package name. If it does not, it will install as a separate app and your local data will not carry over.

Step 2: Confirm the signing key

Use the signature verification guide to confirm that the new APK is signed with the same key as the installed one. A different signing key is treated as a separate app for update purposes.

Step 3: Back up local data

On Android 10 and above, the system automatically backs up user data for many apps. To be safe, copy the app’s local folder to a separate location. You will need a file manager with root access for this; if you do not have one, skip this step and rely on the system backup.

Step 4: Install over the existing package

Open the new APK and tap Update rather than Install. If the button reads Install, the package name or signing key has changed and you should stop and re-check both.

Step 5: Verify the version

Open the app and check the version field in the in-app settings. Compare it to the version listed on the developer entry. If they match, the update was successful.

If something goes wrong

The troubleshooting guide covers the most common update failures.

When an in-place update is safe

Updates that keep the same package name and the same signing key are safe to install over the existing app. Local data is preserved by Android. Updates that change the package name, or that are signed with a different key, will not install over the existing app and will require a clean install.

Backing up local data before an update

Even when an in-place update is safe, the Yono Rummy library team recommends exporting local app data with Android's built-in backup before installing. Settings, system, backup, turn on back up to Google Drive. Confirm the app appears in the list before installing the update.

After the update

Open the app, confirm the version field matches the value on the app section, and confirm the local data is intact. If the update introduced a new permission request, decline any permission that is not listed on the developer entry.
